Are you getting ready to go on a trip and also have homework that you need to do while you’re on that trip? There are a lot of school essentials for traveling that you’ll need to be successful in completing your homework.
I have been traveling a lot during school and plan on traveling some more in the future.
There have been times when I didn’t pack enough or I packed the wrong items and those situations sucked. Especially when I was hours away from home to get what I needed.
So, I am listing 12 extremely necessary school essentials for traveling to save you the stress of going through the unfortunate events that I had to go through.
This post is all about the necessary school essentials for traveling.

13 School Essentials For Traveling That You Need To Remember
1. Writing Utensils
You absolutely must have writing utensils if you want to do homework while traveling.
If you’re going to tell me “but all of my classes and school work is done online”, then I am going to say back that you still need writing utensils.
What if the internet goes down?
What if you have to send in handwritten proof that you did the assignment?
How will you send pictures of your signature to your professor? (I’ve had to do that before.)
Also, what if you’re computer crashed and all your homework is gone?
If you write it out, you have a tangible piece of paper with all of the information that you need. You also don’t need the internet to access it.
I am all for the old fashion way of studying by writing. I feel as if writing the information is more intentional with the learning process than typing.
Some of your teachers or professors might assign paper assignments too and you kinda need writing utensils for that.
2. Paper
You need notebook paper to write your notes on.
I guess it doesn’t have to be notebook paper. Graph paper, printer paper, lined paper, it doesn’t really matter.
The important thing is that you have something to write on. You’ll need paper for note-taking, brainstorming, planning.
A lot of my current classes require me to draw images. For my chemistry classes, I have to draw the reaction mechanisms so I am one of the students that need paper to complete my school work.
Honestly, if you want to procrastinate (even though you really shouldn’t), you could use your paper to doodle or making origami figures.
3. Laptop
Nowadays, a lot of school work is done online. It’s more convenient for both the students and the teachers.
You need a laptop for when you’re doing homework while traveling because they are portable and can store all of your online school work in them.
Laptops also make it very easy to access all of your online assignments no matter where you go.
If you don’t have a laptop and plan on doing homework while you travel, it might be really difficult to find a library nearby and use their computers.
You technically could use your phone but the screen isn’t very big. Using a phone can also be very limiting to all that you need to do.
Also, having a large screen on a laptop makes watching crash course videos a lot easier than your phone.
If you’re someone that does use their laptop for absolutely everything (why aren’t you writing?) then I would think you already know to take your laptop everywhere anyway.
4. Laptop Charger
Please please PLEASE do not forget to bring your laptop charger.
You do not want to experience doing homework assignments, see that your laptop is dying, and reach for the charger that isn’t there. I’ve done it SO many times.
Luckily, I do most of my assignments ahead of time so when I finally reunite with my laptop charger, I’m able to finish my assignments before the deadline.
I don’t know if you’re as school-driven as I am so just be sure to bring your charger so that you don’t run into any issues.
I feel like the laptop is so easy to remember because of how big it is. You can’t miss it.
But then you’ll think “okay I’m done” and forget that you need the charger to use the laptop.
Don’t be like me and grab your charger too.
5. Flash Drive
If your laptop storage isn’t enough storage for you, then you should consider getting a flash drive.
Besides the extra storage that the flash drive provides, it can act as a way to back up your files too.
I only recently started using a flash drive. I didn’t really need one before.
The bad part about not using a flash drive was that everything on my laptop was not organized. I would have a hard time finding a lot of the assignments that I had saved.
I could have organized everything on my laptop, but I was just really lazy about it. The flash drive motivated me to be more organized.
One day, I had to wipe my laptop clean of everything on it and needed to back up all my files. That was the beginning of my use of a flash drive.
I think my school life would have gone a little smoother if I started using a flash drive sooner. I spent the last 2+ years scrolling through all my documents to find notes that I needed for a different assignment.
You’ll save yourself a lot of time if you start organizing and backing up your files as you go.
6. Internet
You need the internet to access all of your online assignments on your laptop. (Unless you were smart to download them all before you left for your trip.)
I don’t know if you have access to a portable internet hotspot but if you do, that would be beneficial. You might end up in the middle of nowhere or you might be in a place that doesn’t provide internet.
You will also need the internet if you are someone that uses programs like google docs and google calendar.
All of your information is synced to your Google account so you can access all of the same autosaved files from any device. But it only works if you have internet.
I know that a lot of students utilize YouTube to learn topics too and you need the internet for that.
Nowadays, you pretty much need the internet to do almost everything.
So, do whatever you need to do to get access to the internet when you’re doing homework while you’re traveling.
7. Teacher Contact Information
Having your teacher’s contact information is an absolute must.
I have gone through so many situations where I didn’t know how to do my assignments while I was out of town and needed help.
Since you are traveling, you can’t exactly get up and instantly go to your teacher’s class or office hours for help.
Having your teacher’s contact information is just a really good backup and a lifesaver for unexpected events.
You can also let your teacher know of your situation too so that they could try to accommodate you if something goes wrong. You may have an issue with the change in time zone or something (but don’t rely on that because not many teachers are that lenient.)
8. Bring ALL Your Assignments
I would recommend that you bring all of your assignments, including the ones that you don’t plan on working on during your travels.
You never know if you’ll get the chance to do more school work.
There have been a lot of times where I went to go travel with my family and I ended up at a place that didn’t have a lot for me to do.
Those were the times I wish I had more homework so that way I wasn’t bored.
I also have this issue where I have assignments that are due sooner than others but I would rather do the other assignments over the sooner due assignments. It’s so weird and I dislike that I feel that because it causes me to procrastinate.
I have had to rush my sooner due dates so many times because I decided to do the less important assignments first.
That happened to me last week. I turned in my assignment 30 minutes before the deadline and I had a week to do it beforehand. It only took me two hours to do.
So don’t procrastinate friends. You’ll save yourself a lot of stress.
9. Bring ALL Your Notes
I would recommend that you bring all of your notes for all your classes because sometimes you might misplace notes from one class in the wrong folder.
You may also run into the event of bringing along the wrong folder while you travel. Then you’ll realize you don’t have what you need when you get to your destination.
If you just bring all of your notes, you won’t have to run into that issue. This tip could also apply to bringing all of your assignments too.
There are also the occasional times where you have notes in one class that can also be used to complete assignments in another class.
For example, I could use the notes that I took in my chemistry lab classes to do my chemistry lecture assignments.
Just bring everything. You won’t regret it even if your back hurts from the extra weight.
10. Flashlight
Honestly, it was kind of silly of me to put a flashlight on here because you don’t see a lot of students carrying around flashlights (at least I haven’t).
But I decided to put a flashlight on the list because I have been in dark locations before and needed a flashlight to do my school work.
I would do my homework early in the morning or late at night most of the time. Everyone would be sleeping and I wouldn’t be able to turn the lights on.
I guess I could go to the bathroom and do my homework but I would much prefer to have a flashlight over that.
If someone takes a #2 bathroom break before you go in, you will not survive in there to do your homework.
Also, the bathroom floor is probably not as comfy as a regular hotel room floor or even the bed.
So, get a flashlight because you won’t know when you’ll need it.
I like to have a heavy-duty flashlight because it can also act as a weapon for protection alongside a light source. Staying safe as a traveling student is a top priority.
11. Headphones
Headphones are a must because you need to focus while you’re doing your schoolwork.
I am going to assume that when you’re traveling with homework, you’re traveling with family or friends.
Both parties can be loud and distracting. Especially when they are having tons of fun conversations while you’re in your little corner doing homework.
You may also need headphones to listen to videos that your teachers provide or videos that you look up online.
It wouldn’t be ideal to play it out loud for everyone to hear because not only will you not be able to get a clear listen of the video, the people around you will have to listen to your boring learning videos too.
Another thing that I hear a lot of people say is that they need music to study.
So, I guess if you’re one of those people then don’t forget about your headphones, or else you’ll be screwed.
You could also borrow someone else’s nasty headphones if you’re that desperate (lol please don’t share ear waxes.)
12. Hair Ties
For all you people that have long hair, I can not stress enough how important it is to have hair ties on you at all times.
When you’re traveling, there will be times when you’re in really hot areas. You know how hard it is to focus when you’re sweating like crazy.
I also like to keep my hair out of my face when I am working because it gets annoying every time my hair falls and blocks my vision when I am in the zone of concentration.
You can also use hair ties to tie your writing utensils together too. This is a good alternative tip if you don’t have a pencil pouch or don’t want to bring your pencil pouch.
I think hair ties hurt less than rubber bands too since they are more cushion than straight rubber for tying your writing utensils.
13. Backpack
The backpack is the last school essential because you need a place to hold all of the items that I listed above (obviously.)
You need to invest in a really good quality backpack.
I used to buy the cheap $10-20 backpacks from Walmart that would be worn out with a lot of holes after the first year (sometimes sooner.) I thought that as long as it did its job and lasted me at least a whole year, it would good enough.
But if you plan on traveling with this cheap backpack, it will probably have a shorter life span than a year.
You’re going to be tossing it and lungeing it around.
It’s gonna go through some weather changes and bumps in new locations too.
You need a backpack that can survive all that chaos.
If you invest in a really good quality backpack, it would probably last you plenty of years (even in the rough events).
You’ll save money in the long run too.
I didn’t decide to spend money on an $80 backpack until I started college because I didn’t think a backpack was worth $80.
Now, I can confidently say that it is one of the best purchases I have ever made.
I have had my North Face Borealis backpack for almost 3 years now and it looks almost the same as when I first bought it.
I take it on almost every trip that I go on when I have homework to do.
It’s not as stiff anymore but I don’t have any holes in it as my previous backpacks did within the first year.
So, if you’re on the fence about an expensive good quality backpack, just do it. You’ll be glad you did.

Are there other school essentials for traveling that I forgot about?
I hope that I am always prepared for my future travels with homework. I can’t afford to forget assignments or notes again. I bother my classmates for help too much as is.
