This post is all about how to make college easier.
College has the reputation of being the best 4 years of your life. You have more freedom, maybe more time, and is the time where you discover yourself and figure out who you are (so cliche). But even though you have all these fun benefits and experiences to do as you please, there is a lot of responsibility that comes with going to college.
You’ll want to go out and have all this fun but then you might miss some classes, lose focus in classes, and forget deadlines. It happens, and it’s okay. I’m here to help make your college experience easier by giving you these 7 tips that are currently helping me get through college. (I’m in my 3rd year right now!)
This post is all about how to make college easier.

How To Make College Easier
1. Have A Planner
To stay organized in college, I recommend you purchase a planner. The purpose of a planner is for you to write down everything that you want to get done and what needs to get done.
Planners help if you’re a forgetful person too. You can write down ahead of time important dates such as project due dates or exam dates. Also, since you’re jotting down everything on paper, it makes you feel relief and as if you have more space in your mind to think of other things. I don’t know if you feel that way but that is how I feel.
I am okay with forgetting what I write down in my planner because I know that if I do forget about something, it is written down in my planner to remind me.
You don’t have to use paper planners either. You can do online planners such as google calendar or any other platform that acts as a planner.
2. Use Binders + Folders
To make your college experience easier, you absolutely need to invest in some binders and/ or folders. The purpose of binders and folders is to keep each of your classes separated from each other so that you can find anything and everything you need quickly.
I also color-code each of my classes with the colors of the rainbow. When I color code, my classes, it makes the process of looking for specific assignments much faster. If all my binders or folders were the same color, I would have to flip through each binder or folder until I find the class that I need.
There are some people out there that can somehow stay organized with one giant binder and keep all their classes in one place but for me, flipping through every page to find it is a waste of my precious time and time is money.
So, to make your college life easier, invest in multiple binders and/ or folders.
3. Don’t Procrastinate
I know you’re not going to listen to this advice but hear me out anyway. Don’t procrastinate. You’ve heard it a million times and you’re going to hear it from me too.
Procrastinating just sets you up for failure.
You push off one thing and then everything afterward gets pushed off. As this list of things being pushed off adds up, you’re going to have so much more stuff to do at once than you did before and you’ll just end up overwhelmed. We don’t want that.
If you have a project due in 3 weeks, start it at least 2 weeks ahead of time and just get it done. Getting it done sooner will also ensure you still remember all the information that goes along with the project too.
So, if you want to save yourself some stress, trouble, and feelings of not having enough time to do anything, don’t procrastinate.
4. Create a Routine
Another important tip I have is to create a daily routine for yourself.
Your routine should start the moment you wake up. You should be waking up at the same time every day. Then, you need to decide how you want to spend the first hour or two of your time. Are you going to eat breakfast, exercise, do school work or laze around? And then by the middle of the day, you should have already started doing some form of school work.
I do not recommend waiting to start doing school work 8+ hours after you’ve woken up because you are most likely tired by then and want to laze around even more. So, if I were you, I would start your day by being productive. Cleaning, homework, exercising.
Being productive first will give you this feeling of being rewarded when you are done. When you finish doing all your productive things, you can spend the rest of your day doing whatever you want. You can go out, lay in bed all day, watch movies, etc.
But overall, create a routine for yourself. Do the same activities at the same time every day. Having a routine allows you to always know what should be done next and you won’t be spending all your time trying to decide how to spend your day.
5. Make Sleep a Priority
Along with having a routine, you need to make sleep a priority. I don’t care what anyone says. Sleep is not for the weak. Sleep is so important for brain and body function and is even more important during college.
You’re going to have busy schedules and your classes are only going to get harder. Having a routine will keep you in a rhythm and not having you guess what to do next while sleep ensures that you can handle getting everything done in a timely manner. Sleep will also help you with processing what you learn in school.
You should be aiming for 8+ hours of sleep. The internet normally says 7-9 hours, but I believe we should strive for 8-9 hours. I say 8-9 hours because, for me, I can feel my sleep deprivation when I get less than 8 hours. Getting only 7 hours of sleep a night is simply not enough.
The max hours of sleep should be 9 hours because if you sleep for too long, your body will start to feel sick and groggy. You also haven’t been eating or drinking during those 9 hours of sleep so you need to get up, give your body some fuel, and release your bladder.
If you have to force yourself to stop doing homework and turn in what you have to get a sufficient amount of sleep, then do it. Turning in something is always better than turning in nothing.
So, make sleep a priority. School is important but I think sleep is more important to help you keep up with your school. In the end, you just need to learn, pass the class, and get that degree.
6. Take Breaks + Hang Out with Friends
College is not only for school and I’m sure you know that very well. Going to college is an opportunity for you to explore your interests and meet new people. You may end up becoming an entirely different person than who you were back in high school.
So while you’re studying super hard and getting those good but stressful grades, you need to make time for yourself to go out in the world and explore. These moments of exploration and hanging out with friends will give you a nice break from overworking your brain.
Everyone you talk to always says that lots of breaks are just as important as lots of studying. Breaks have been proven to increase your memory and processing of new information.
Go out, have some fun with some friends for an hour or two. Come back and get going with productivity again.
7. Stay Focused On Your Goals
You’re going to college for a reason and I want you to stay focused on those goals.
Why are you going to college? Where do you want to be when you graduate college? You need to have life goals that are so strong you’d do anything to get there.
For me, I want to one day have a travel job and I chose the medical field because we will always need medical workers. For me to get there, I have to get a degree by going to college, start making income, and apply for a travel agency (I think that’s how it works). That is my long-time goal to travel the work and doing it through my job is a dream come true.
So, what’s your life goal? Stay focused on it and make all your decisions with the intention of reaching that life goal.
